The importance of an annual visit

Obstetrician–gynecologists provide preventive care to women. An annual visit provides an excellent opportunity to counsel patients about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and minimizing health risks. Furthermore, many serious medical conditions are first suspected or discovered during these routine exams.

A physical examination is a key part of an annual visit. Many, but not all, women will also have a pelvic examination and a clinical breast examination as a part of the physical examination.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) don’t always have obvious symptoms. Although condoms are effective in reducing transmission, no method is 100% foolproof. If you think you have a STI, or have been exposed, you need to see a doctor. Symptoms may include pain, discharge, burning or pain with urination, bleeding, itching, fever and swollen lymph nodes. Timely diagnosis and treatment can avoid serious health problems and infecting others. Some STIs can be treated easily, while others require long-term treatment.

If you are sexually active or are thinking about becoming sexually active, speak to your OB/GYN to learn how to protect yourself. If you think you have contracted an STI, schedule an appointment with a trusted St. Luke’s physician today by calling St. Luke’s InfoLink toll-free at 1-866-STLUKES.
