Overview
St. Luke’s Center for Urology offers advanced robotic-assisted surgery for precise, minimally invasive treatment of urologic conditions. Our specialists provide a range of options, including cryotherapy, vasectomy, and radiation therapy, with both office-based and hospital-based care available across St. Luke’s University Health Network.
Robotic Surgery
St. Luke’s Center for Urology utilizes the DA Vinci® Surgical Robot System for various urological procedures, offering benefits such as less pain, reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery, and a faster return to normal activities. The system provides enhanced vision, access, and precision through advanced optics and robotic technology.
St. Luke’s Center for Urology performs the following procedures using the DA Vinci® system:
Kidney Cancer Treatments
- Robotic Radical Nephrectomy: Laparoscopic removal of the kidney and surrounding structures, required when partial nephrectomy is not feasible.
- Robotic Partial Nephrectomy: Removal of small renal tumors without sacrificing the entire kidney, maintaining renal function with similar cure rates to full kidney removal.
Additional Robotic Urological Surgeries
- Robotic Pyeloplasty: Repairs ureteral blockages.
- Robotic Ureteral Reimplantation: Repairs ureteral blockages or fistulas (urine leakage).
- Robotic Partial Cystectomy: Removes diseased, typically cancerous, bladder tissue and reconstructs the bladder wall using robotic instruments.
- Robotic Radical Prostatectomy: Removes the prostate gland and seminal vesicles.
- Robotic Adrenalectomy: Removes the adrenal gland and surrounding structures, typically performed alongside a radical nephrectomy.
Cryotherapy
St. Luke’s Center for Urology offers cryotherapy for both prostate and kidney cancer, a relatively new, yet well-established approach to the treatment of these malignancies. It is also one of the most minimally invasive approaches available. The therapy involves very little discomfort and can be performed as outpatient surgery in the hospital or as an overnight observational stay. Cryotherapy is FDA approved, approved by all insurances.
Vasectomy
A vasectomy is a surgical procedure that permanently prevents a man from fathering children by cutting or blocking the tubes that carry sperm from the testes to the urethra. For couples who have decided their families are complete, it offers a highly effective, permanent birth control solution while maintaining normal sexual function. When performed correctly, vasectomies are nearly 100 percent effective. Though vasectomy reversal or sperm retrieval with in vitro fertilization is possible, these options can be costly and are not guaranteed to succeed.
Radiation Therapy
Urologists at St. Luke’s Center for Urology (SLCU) collaborate with St. Luke’s Cancer Center to offer radiation therapy for urological cancers. Radiation Oncology uses advanced technology to safely deliver radiation treatment, with radiation oncologists working alongside dosimetrists and physicists to create a personalized treatment plan for each patient.
