  • Learn to process tissue samples for routine histologic techniques for examination by a pathologist
  • Train in histologic techniques: fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining of human and animal tissue for evaluation

9-12 months on-the-job training program (didactic & clinical phases) that specializes in clinical laboratory science and microbiology


Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Science (BS) in related field
  • 2-year employee commitment to St. Luke’s laboratory services after program completion
  • Capability and approval to sit for the ASCP registry exam for the Microbiology, Medical Technologist (ASCP) test within 3 months post-program OR Medical Laboratory Scientist registry exam with 5 years of clinical lab experience

Program details

  • Perform moderately to highly complex testing on analytical equipment to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients
  • Conduct quality control and maintenance procedures on equipment to ensure accuracy and precision in patient testing
  • Learn from assigned faculty and mentorship

Duration
6 weeks (40 hr/wk) accelerated training program of clinical externship and lecture


Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • 1-year commitment as a phlebotomist for St. Luke’s lab
  • Must apply and be hired as a St. Luke’s phlebotomist prior to session start

  • Provides direct patient care by supporting patients with collecting blood and non-blood lab specimens as well as performing EKGs and registering patients
  • Serves as a critical role to enabling a doctor to screen for and diagnose a patient’s illness or disease, as well as monitor medications and wellness progress
