Daily structure
A typical day on the IR rotation begins with pre-rounding on inpatients who underwent procedures the day before. Teaching rounds are then conducted, where residents present progress reports on pre-rounded patients, discuss scheduled cases for the day, and inpatient add-ons. Throughout the day, residents work with attending physicians to assist in evaluation of consult requests, pre-procedural workup, procedures, and post-procedure management, participating in the full spectrum of IR patient care from beginning to end.
Our program places a strong emphasis on graduated responsibility and autonomy, increasing levels of responsibility based on resident’s procedural comfort level and competency
At the same time, we believe in promoting a healthy work-life balance, and we have mechanisms in place to ensure that our residents get the rest they need to be at their best every day.
Call system
During the first four years of training (PGY2-5), integrated IR residents share diagnostic call responsibilities with DR residents, ensuring that they gain exposure to a wide range of clinical scenarios and develop their diagnostic skills.
In their final year (PGY6), integrated IR residents participate in buddy IR calls with an attending physician. Our call schedule is meticulously crafted to ensure that call shifts are spaced out, guaranteeing that residents are well-rested and fostering a nurturing learning environment. Residents are not expected to provide full coverage of the call schedule. We firmly believe that the purpose of calls is not driven by service needs, but rather to help our residents become familiar with emergency procedures and gain confidence in high-pressure situations.
During the third and fourth year you will participate in middlehawk evening (1-9pm/2-10pm) and nighthawk overnight (10pm-7am) weeklong shifts extending into weekends. These will take place in lieu of your traditional daytime rotations and will also occur on average of q6. Nighthawk call will be from Friday-Thursday night to afford you a golden weekend and ensure adequate time for rest and recovery before your next rotation begins.
