Steve Carlton Makes a Special Appearance in Bethlehem

Baseball was in the air in Bethlehem on Saturday, April 8 as Hall of famer and four-time Cy Young award winner Steve Carlton made a special appearance at the Moravian | St. Luke’s Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Center open house.

Carlton talked baseball including his sometimes unorthodox conditioning and training routines, different pitching styles, and how pitching has changed over the years on St. Luke’s Sports Medicine Round-Up. The ESPN program was broadcast live with host Mike Raymond and fellow guests, St. Luke’s orthopedic surgeon Dr. Daniel Heckman and physical therapist Howie Knudson.

Carlton truly enjoys teaching young ball players the skills of the game. Following the radio program, he gave personal instruction to close to 40 Babe Ruth and District XI pitchers from the area, showing them different grips, proper mechanics and throwing techniques to improve accuracy and avoid injury. Some of the coaches commented “It was the best instruction our kids ever received.”

Athletes, coaches and parents attending the open house had an opportunity to meet with St. Luke’s athletic trainers and physical therapists. They also were able to check out the advanced rehabilitation technologies offered the center, including the Alter G anti-gravity treadmill, LightForce Laser Therapy, EPAT shockwave therapy and the Biodex Balance System.
