I am a third generation physician and have had the pleasure of taking care of some patients that were treated by my father and grandfather. I enjoy caring for my patients, hearing about how their lives are going, and I strive to provide high quality care. I grew up in Bethlehem, moved away for college and medical school, and decided to move back to Bethlehem because I feel it is such a great place to live.
I graduated from Davidson College in North Carolina, and Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia. I was in private practice for 15 years and then joined St. Luke's in 2016.
When not in the office I enjoy mountain biking, hiking, seeing live music and spending time appreciating nature.

“I have recommended Dr. Shields to many of my friends. I deal with many people who just moved to this area and give him Dr. Shields' contact info. I also send my three sons to Dr. Shields'. He does an excellent job diagnosing strange conditions and when and when not to give medications.”

“Every visit, message , question to Dr David Shields is promptly responded to in an intelligent and caring way---I have said before that Dr Shields is an outstanding example of how SLHN has evolved into what I believe is the finest hospital in Pa. I made my first, albeit , conservative donation to Slhn this week as I feel Mr. Anderson has done such an outstanding job with his expansion.”
